San Antonio Celebrates Contemporary Art (March 22)
The San Antonio Museum of Art celebrates contemporary art today, March, 22 with an annual gala event that coincides with the opening of San Antonio Collects: Contemporary Art, which opens to the public March 24th, and exhibits through July 1, 2012.
“This exhibition will feature works from private collections throughout San Antonio, and will recognize those individuals who support contemporary artists through the acquisition of their work,” according to SAMA’s website.
Hosted by prominent San Antonio collector Linda Pace—of the Linda Pace Foundation and of course Felix Gonzales Torres billboards in New Jersey–the exhibition promises to excite with pieces from Olafur Eliasson to Jim Hodges. Pace’s own collection of contemporary artworks is over 500 pieces. And, I am eager to see what other San Antonio collectors have in store—certainly international and Texas-based artists will be represented.
Philanthropy in support of contemporary art with a goal of “recognizing the role that San Antonio collectors have played in the city’s evolution towards becoming recognized as a premier art destination,” (samuseum.org)—I’m there!
