Gallery Fridays

What’s going on this weekend—August 12-14—in terms of art openings, closings and events?

Let’s start with Santa Fe (as Gallery Fridays currently focuses on Austin and Santa Fe, two of AdobeAirstream’s hub cities).

I’m most excited about I am Animal, Vegetable, Mineral in Axle Contemporary’s mobile gallery.  The opening is tonight, August 12, at 5 PM. It’s a group exhibition, featuring: Erika Wanenmacher, Patti Levey, Shirley Klinghoffer, Jerry Wellman, Eliza Naranjo Morse, Suzanne Sbarge, Charlie Carrillo. Axle will be parked in front of Eight Modern, 231 Delgado Street. (An aside: have you noticed Axle’s poetry project? I spotted a poem near the Co-Op a few days ago!)

If you’re more interested in monochromatic paintings (rather than animal parts), attend Tom Miller’s opening tonight at Box Gallery, August 12, 5-7 PM.

The Lannan Foundation Gallery presents Guy Tillim: Avenue Patrice Lumumba Exhibit, now through September 4. Catch the show tomorrow or Sunday, August 13-14, 12-5pm (weekends only). Tillim portrays African cities, by photographing numerous streets named after Lumumba, one of the first democratically elected presidents. It’s a stunning series of photographs!

Santa Fe Art Institute, gearing up for their Santa Fe River Exploration Workshop, opens an exhibition with T. Allan Comp, an Environmental Scientist, and Bobbe Fesold, today, August 12, 12-5 PM.

If you’re “galler-ied-out” by 6 PM on Saturday August 13, Meow Wolf holds Lionhead Bunny, Letters, Mariposa on THE SHIP at the CCA. Also this weekend August 14, Meow Wolf will be on Santa Fe’s plaza from 12-3 PM for The 4th Annual Monster Battle, 2011 Edition.

In Texas—although not in Austin—Felix Gonzales Torres billboards in New Jersey is a premier contemporary art venue in the state, located in San Antonio. So, if you’ve never attended one of their Taco Friday events—do it! It’s happening today, August 12, from 12-2 PM.

In Austin, the Austin Museum of Art, is having a “Free Day,” allowing free admission to the public. Certainly, I recommend heading out prior to the museum’s departure from the downtown location. They are closing soon. Read more: Austin Museum of Art Closes Downtown Location.

The Blanton Museum of Art, at the University of Texas, holds two public tours this weekend, August 13 and 14 from 3-4 PM, for the About Face: Portraiture as Subject exhibition.

Whatever you do this weekend, have fun!
