Gallery Fridays

The following are openings/closings for Austin, TX and Santa Fe, NM for the weekend of August 5, 6, and 7, 2011.

In Santa Fe, this weekend, the big event is certainly SOFA West. Several events and openings will concur with the fair. Canyon Road Gallery Night in conjunction with SOFA West, tonight, Friday, August 5 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Galleries will stay open late for SOFA visitors.

Tom Chambers opens Dreaming in Reverse at Photo-eye Gallery tonight, August 5, from 4 – 7 pm—a definite highlight for the weekend, exhibiting a new series of photos by Chambers, which were inspired by Mexico. The exhibition continues through September 25.

SOFA West hosts various lectures this year. Tomorrow, August 6, starting at 12:30 Cleo Wilson, Executive Director, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art from Chicago will discuss outsider art. Lectures continue at the convention center tomorrow until 4:30 pm and throughout the weekend. Language of Glass, a panel discussion about the illusive material: glass, begins at 3:30 pm.

More from SOFA West: on Saturday, starting at 5 pm, gallery director, Yvonna Demczynska, from Flow Gallery, hosts a discussion on contemporary Irish crafts. Admission to lectures and talks at SOFA West are free with admission to the fair.

If you decide to venture away from downtown Santa Fe this weekend, head to Box Gallery to catch the closing of Krista Peters’ Scar Paper, on August 7.

And, while you’re in the Railyard District stop by James Kelly Contemporary to see John Sonsini’s exhibition, prior to the closing on August 6.

In Austin, openings include: Advanced Young Artists, the Arthouse’s annual event, August 6 – 21; the same night, August 6, Wally Workman Gallery opens Stanford Kay + Sarah Ferguson.

Outside of fine art, find artistic cinema at Violet Crown in Austin, with the opening of The Future, a new movie by Miranda July, who was recently featured on the cover of Modern Painters.
