ALBERT BIERSTADT (1830-1902)
Mount Rainier (1890)
oil on canvas, 54″ x 83″
Sold at Auction: $2,143,000

The Coeur D’Alene Art Auction, held July 23, 2011 in Reno, NV, rebounded this year with 90% of the 304 lots sold for a total of approximately $16.7 million. Four Albert Bierstadt paintings sold, including the highlight of the sale, a 54″ x 83″ oil, Mount Rainier, which topped out at $2,143,000. The surprise of the sale was Lander’s Peak, Wyoming, a 36″ x 26″ oil expected to sell for $600,000-$900,000, but hammered down at $1,863,000, more than twice the estimate. They still didn’t hit the 95% of lots sold that they boast on their website and results are nowhere near the $36,966,425 sold in 2008. However, they more than doubled sales results over last year’s dismal $9,202,552.
